What do I classify as an effective presentation?

An effective presentation is one in which:

·          The presenter is sure of his/her key (important) messages.

·          The key messages in the presentation are clearly presented to the audience.

·          The key messages are not obscured by a lot of unnecessary information.

·          The presentation is not unnecessarily long.

·          The presentation follows a clear and logical structure.

·          The choice of presentation structure is appropriate for the type of message.

·          Any slides or visuals used in the presentation support the presenter – rather than distracting the audience’s attention away from the presenter.

·          Any slides or visuals are clear and not over-busy.

·          There are not too many slides used – in particular, not too many bullet point slides.

And there’s more

·          The presenter does not rush the presentation.

·          The presenter does not continually look round at the screen where their slides are being projected.

·          The presenter does not read from their slides – unless they do this purposefully to emphasise a point.

·          The presenter connects strongly with their audience from the start of their presentation.

·          The presenter continues to connect and reconnect with their audience throughout the presentation.

·          The presenter uses appropriate movement and body language to bring emphasis to their presentation.

·          The presenter varies their voice and does not speak in a monotone, or let their voice drop off at the end of sentences.

·          The presenter finishes their presentation strongly.

·          The presenter finishes their presentation on time.

So why aren’t many presentations like this? After all many people go on presentation training courses.
